EDITORIAL: AN OPEN LETTER TO LIL WAYNE

February 2, 2009
One of illseed.com’s readers was so fired up about Lil’ Wayne they wrote a letter and sent it over. This letter was not edited for length, clarity or grammar. Baby, we like it raw.

An Open Letter to Lil’ Wayne

You make me want to scream!!! No I am not a hater so please spare me the rap adages about how “I don’t understand because I’m not from the hood”, or “I want what you have, so I’m mad”. That could not be further from the truth.  As a matter a fact I was a fan until about a week ago. Please allow me to explain.

Last week I heard a report that you don’t read books. You went on to say “I don’t believe any books. Not even the Bible. The only book I believe in is the dictionary”. First off, let me say anyone who does not believe the word of God is a species all of their own and may I suggest you skip this whole life thing and go straight to hell! It saddens me to know that you are one of the few people on this planet that has found their gift, does it well and actually has the opportunity to pursue it on a worldwide level. Where do you think this gift came from?! We were all sent here with a purpose and you have just discounted the man who sent you here to do so. But then again you don’t believe the Bible, so by all means continue to worship Birdman as your Holy Father. But for ‘Birdman’s’ sake, please just stop talking! I don’t know if you’re doing this shit for shock value or what and I know you and a slew of other rappers don’t want to be known as role models but the fact of the matter is YOU ARE.  So when you say such asinine things about the demotion of books, children listen. Bottom line…

I thought your Tour de Dumbass was over until I listened to the radio this morning and find that you were given a rare opportunity to speak with the well revered Katie Couric. As the morning show host introduced the clip I said to myself, “Please Lord, let him say something intelligent” Please Lord, let him say something intelligent”. Man, I wish I would have prayed that prayer last week because; you blew it again; making Sarah Palin’s interview actually look like a scholarly exchange. When asked, if you have any questions for the former President George W. Bush concerning Hurricane Katrina you said, “Naw, gangstas don’t ask questions”. What the hell does that mean?! And if not on a nationally broadcast station, would you have said a full fledged, “Gangsta’s don’t ask questions, they shoot”. I thought we were over this whole gangsta façade. I thought we made a judicious decision as the hip-hop community that that wasn’t cool and gets you nowhere in life, other than jail and death?! If there has been some kind of change where that profession (if it is one) is worth putting your life on the line, then please let me know. If there have been some recent changes in the benefits of this career path then oblige me.  Until then allow me to say, it is not cool dude! In fact, aside from being your tattoo artist it is the uncoolest profession in the history of man, you fool!

I know how this goes. In order for you to listen to me even in the least bit, I need some kinda street cred, right? Well if it makes you feel better, I live on Bankhead. Sorry, that’s all I got. In addition, I am and always have been an avid supporter of the rap community even when Al Sharpton was shitting all over us this time last year, I stood up for the creative use of the word nigger, the artistic expression that all artist are entitled to and I even blindly defended your open excessive drug use. But this is where my concern comes in… I am also big listener of AM right winged radio host. I do so in order to broaden my perspective of politics. Since you don’t read I’m just going to assume that you also don’t listen, so let me tell you what they say about us – they talk about us like dogs! It saddens me to hear them say things like, “from the White House to Runs House” while discussing the inaugural ball. My heart hurts when they have whites’ listeners call in mocking us, saying, “Hi my name is Leroy and I’m a black man and it’s over for whitey. This is a black planet now. There’s no stopping us”. I hate to hear them say how we have no idea what’s going on and that we just chant Obama’s change motto like zombies. I am enraged when I hear them discuss single family homes and how single mothers breed criminals and strippers. They go on to say how our children are raised with little character, direction and skill. Who gives them the right to say these things about us? You do Dewayne! You do! They watch us! Shit, the whole world is watching us right now. It is time to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity set before us and do as my President has instructed, “to take personal responsibility and put away childish things”. Just in case you missed it, I’d suggest you read the damn transcript!

Destiny L. Stokes has got issues, i agree that a person should constantly educate themselves by preferably reading cause thats how you get wiser besides from experience but having a fit about weather a person believes in the Bible or not is outright dumb.
You dont read books to believe what they tell you unless they state FACTS which are backed by evidence, but if you didnt know you should read to get a different perspective on an issue then make up your mind. And to say that his accomplishments have been awarded to him by GOD is an insult to any hard working person, if you want to believe that god gave you what you have than dream on but some of us dont pray for anything we want WE WORK HARD FOR IT. Any rational person cant believe a book that claims extraordinary events without offering evidence so PLEASE spare me the BULLSHIT. If you take comfort in religion bcoz you are afraid to die and what an everlasting afterlife than that is Ok but which bible would you want Wayne to believe? The Catholic bible, Mormon bible, Quran? I bet you want him to believe the very same bible you clutch to your chest bcoz it holds the truth and the others are false. I agree with nearly everything you said but Keep your religious beliefs to yourself.

Destiny: for not believing the bible, wayne is infinitely wiser than you will ever be.

  5. February 2, 2009 1:53 pm

I believe that Destiny’s point was ignored when she brought you being upset about religion. But the fact is that the world is watching the Black community and is just waiting for the community as a whole to screw up. Lil Wayne saying that he doesn’t read is absured and it just gives right wing America another reason to put down the black community. Secondly, role models whether you want to be our not, kids look up to you and telling them you shouldn’t read because you can’t believe what you read is ridiculous. And yes that is what he said to children that hold him in esteem when he said he doesn’t read because he doesn’t believe anything they say. Not all books are meant to be believed.

  6. February 2, 2009 2:20 pm

I stopped reading at the god rant. It’s 2009. will you god lovers please realize that there are people in this world who don’t believe the words of the book that the roman catholic church put together are factual? I don’t even care about anything else she has to say.

Actually, I believe Destiny has a point… forget the religious talk, let’s get to WHAT Wayne REALLY said… “I don’t believe in books” STOP RIGHT THERE!! What would possess him to say something like that publicly?? And as many people including adults, children, whites, blacks, asians, whomever listen to his music; they are INFLUENCED by it! As many people as I hear bumping Wayne’s music as I’m rolling down the street in my car, as many people as I hear use a Wayne line when they talk; as many of Wayne’s lyrics are used for Myspace headlines and facebook stats.. next thing you know everybody’s status is going to state “I’m like Weezy! I don’t believe in books!!” Like, for real RIDICULOUS! What about when Wayne was supposedly attending college? U don’t read books? U didn’t read your textbooks and do your homework? Probably why he doesn’t attend any longer. But, even him going to school was a big influence on young adults; many have chosen to go back to school. So, for him to make that comment is ridiculous! And, Ok the religious views should be kept to oneself.
Now, to the comment about gangstas?? I’m from the state where GANGSTAS came about, CALIFORNIA.. Gangstas I know ask questions. so for him to say “gangstas don’t ask questions!” ok, maybe to Bush, but for real? You don’t ask questions. This is prob why Spider-Loc and his crip homies block’d your ass in when you was in his city cuz you claim to be oh-so “GANGSTA” This goes back to him being in school, supposedly gangstas don’t go to school, so what were you doin in school, Weezy? As far as I know, if you was a true “gangsta”, the STREETS is your SCHOOl, not an academic institution.
I basically think, I mean don’t get me wrong, I listen to Weezy, but there’s a line one must NOT cross as a role model to children, and thats being IGNORANT! His comments were downright IGNORANT! He should take them back! and ask Obama a question. Let Mr. Humble President tell him about himself!!

you people are so ignorant. to ms. destiny I full heartedly agree. I plan on moving to the next world while the rest of you all burn in hell. lil wayne has sold his soul to the devil to grab his new-found gift that wasn’t always there. & you all follow like a flock. you can burn singing fireman but I plan on seeing those pearly gates. once again, destiny I am with you

You are so ignorant, its not a “gift” it is talent. Beilving in god is just as its writen “Believing” and you are not forced to believe. Faith should never be preached upon anyone. I do not believe in god for the simple fact that I have seen no proof of his exsistance and I have never experienced anything making me think “wow there must be a higher power behind that” or anything like that. I hate when people think they have to “preach the word of god” there is no such thing as a word of god, the bible was believed to be written by prophits, not “god” himself.

and it is not right to condemn, but see ya there? really?
and i will say i am not an adult, but if the rest of yall are, you are extremely childish. you must take into consideration that
1.)these are teenage girls trying to do the right thing in calling a rapper on his wrong doings
2.)this is the right thing to do in this situation.
just calm down people. and yes, what she said is true, we are given talents, we dont just learn.
if you believe of not, the point still stands, he can rap, but hes stupid for rapping about what he raps about.

OK, FIRST of all, Odub86 should maybe take a look at an award show or two. I’m quite sure WAYNE HIMSELF has awarded God, knowing that if it wasn’t for him he wouldn’t be who he is! No, God didn’t do the work for him. But he is most definitely responsible for blessing him with the talent that he has, and the drive to work hard and get it in! You know, that SAME God referenced in that Bible that Wayne DOESN’T believe in! Secondly, what’s up with this whole “I don’t read books” thing anyway??? Don’t you need to read to educate yourself, say, for a psychology degree???? Wait, let me not say degree because I can’t say that Lil’ Wayne has actually gotten his yet. But I will say that in order to study psychology, as well as many other things, you must READ!!!! I am not saying that I am not still a fan of Wayne. Because of his GOD GIVEN talent, he does go hard. I just hope he puts some of that knowledge and intelligence that he’s learned to use, and stop being so ignorant!!

He was just speaking on the way he feel about books dont trash him because of it that’s another man opinion and all you should do is not worry about what he says if he says something like that its just an OPINION like the one im typing on here but other than that his music now is hot garbage i miss the old wayne

All the people that says Ms. Stokes is “stupid” you are the ones thats stupid! I’ve just finish reading the letter and even though she may be a bible toting christian; I think the main point has been missed. I am not a big believer in the bible either but for a pop culture icon such as Lil Wayne to state he doesnt believe in books is wild. Its like this people FUK THE BIBLE, FUK THE DICTIONARY, HELL FUK DR SESUS! Our entire life we have been told to read, read, and read! And you need to if you want to be somewhat of a well spoken and educated individual. In the African American community its too many of us who fall thru the cracks as is and partly due to our lack of knowledge and dislike for a picking up a book unless its Vibe or The Source. Lil Wayne is a role model (whether he wants to be one or not) just like every other rapper and popular entertainer. Its hundreds if not thousands of young niggas across this country that imitate Wayne—everything from tattoos in the face, ugly dreads, ugly gold teeth, and even mimic his ad libs and flow in rap battles. So far a poster child of Generation X to denounce the use of books is crazy. READING IS FUNDAMENTAL PEOPLE! I mean its motherfuckers who got attack by dogs, racist crackers, got spit on, punched, kicked just so we could read a book and be able to obtain the knowledge white america has so long tried to hide from us and hold from us. Now I’m not sayin to believe everything you read and make it law because I know its alot of bullshit out there! Just think of all the great wrtiers we’ve had—everyone from James Baldwin, Zora Neale Hurston, and hell even down to Sister Souljah (you know you got a copy of the Coldest Winter Ever…well those who believe in books) they are well read individuals who has the change the American canon. Do you think they would have had they’re success if they didn’t read? Would Malcolm X, Marcus Garvey, W.E.B. DuBois, Claude McKay and countless others left their mark in history if they didnt pick up a fucking book and educate themselves?!?!?! FUCK NO! look I know we live in a time were books may just become obsolete before the birth of my first child but people you have to read and know. So with all that said Ms. Stokes is not stupid, not an idiot she just seems to be concerned individual that cares about the welfare of here people and I’m proud she (unlike you boot lickers) stood up and said something!

Furthermore I believe Lil Wayne says and does these outlandish things due to his popularity at the present time. I believe the young man is suffering from a Tupac complex! You know how when and even before ‘Pac died he was looked at as sort of a messiah type figure–whether you were a fan or not–in which his words and actions become immortalize and hailed in high regards! And I think thats what Lil Wayne is going through. Due to his popularity and legion of followers he too feels everything he does or say should be taken in carved into stone. I mean take a young man who’s feeling himself add in a couple drugs and you get comments like the abovementioned one. You get interviews with Katie Couric that makes hip hop look even worse to those who already hate it. I mean people Wayne has a child or children (not sure) but either way I just refuse to believe he doesnt encourage education in his household; I mean even th biggest crackheads at least walk their kids to school and if Wayne does tell his offspring(s) to avoid written text SOMEBODY PLEASE CALL DFACS! My personal message to Wayne and all the other entertainers is YOU ALL ALWAYS SAY “IM NOT A ROLE MODEL,” “I DONT WANNA BE A ROLE MODEL!” Well guess what assholes?!?!?! YOU ARE! And before somebody says it YES I BELIEVE TEACHING AND EDUCATION SHOULD START ON THE HOME FRONT WITHIN THE FAMILY SO KIDS AND ADULTS ALIKE CAN STEP OUT INTO THE WORLD PREPARED!!!! Honestly though how many young mafukas you know take heed to th elders advice though?!?!? Im not saying Wayne or other individuals should change their existence because their in the public eye. Just be more mindful of your actions because every single day I’m out in the streets I see some mafuka somewhere acting out the “swag” of their favorite rapper wanting to be that person and since we dont leave in the golden age of rap music anymore many times when these young, impressionable minds act out their favorite rappers “swag” these days they in up in jail or dead.

OK to the people who are PISSED because wayne says he doesnt believe in books THINK FOR A SEC! i read books but if someone says they dont why cant it just let it be?its because its wayne. if a average joe said it it would be cool. when people in bama was saying they had a leperchaun in a tree no one said anything about how ignorant they were, know why that is? because they are nobody’s .and to me they set black people way further back than if Wayne said he didn’t believe in books.

why would u believe in books! they are basically a persons story from there view right?(see the king james bible) its like why do u believe rappers do what they rap about? people can choose what to and not believe in. wayne does believe there is a god because when he accepts awards the thanks him/her.

If he doesn’t believe in books cool. its like believing everything that comes out of peoples mouths. some of u guys don’t believe in the big bang theory cool. they have a book explaining it you don’t believe in that book do u ?

see one thing i came across is people have double standards for beliefs. my religion is right your is wrong.but but the book!! or evolution cannot be proven BUT the bible is proven ? how come all those events that happened in the bible dont happen anymore. i mean parted seas, fire coming outta the sky , burning bushes that arnt burning . why doesnt anything similar to that has happen?not even in the pass 300 years. it is because back then anything that couldn’t be explain back then would be stricken up as gods will when its good and satans when its bad.

I really think that this is not about “the Bible” and that some of you may have gotten this letter confused. The real issue here is that no matter how we look at it, young people do look up to rappers, singers, actors, and such. No matter how hard you try to avoid it. Destiny comes from a music retail background and can speak very intelligently about music and how it affects people. Young and old. We have seen adults come in and buy music for themselves and their kids, explicit lyrics and all. We have seen children come in and request crazy ass songs that we wouldn’t even let our young family members listen to, then watch parents support the request with a sale. Some of the young people listening to his music come from low income families and YES they do idolize him. And that is dangerous. In case some of you did not know, some of these kids are having a hard time just getting out of elementary school knowing how to read, add, and subtract. They do not have computers at home to see what else is out there like most of you do. Believe me WE know! We sell music to them every day. We watch them come to the mall, in the middle of the hood, unsupervised, homework undone, shoes not tied because they do not have shoe strings, no coats and it’s freezing cold outside, riding their bike wondering how they are going to get the latest Wayne cd or mixtape that came out. So, although Wayne cannot take the weight of uplifting our youth, the hip hop community, and black people on his shoulders…as one of the most notable rappers of this time, he has to realize the powerful impact that he has on people no matter who they are or where they are from. And all though music is just entertainment, Destiny (who is not a Bible toting Christian, but a believer in a higher power, and a lover of hip hop) has a great point. We are all held accountable for our words and our actions. And race or religion does not matter. Responsibility matters. Thirst for knowledge matters. Did any of you think about how you would have formed your opinion of the bible, this letter, or any other book had you not picked one up and been coherent enough to decipher the meaning of what you read for yourself???? I firmly suggest that some of you re-read what she said and realize that it was really about speaking intelligently about your views, being responsible enough to realize how you affect your community, and not leaving a negative light on hip hop culture.

    Peace and Love

I agree whith everything Destiny said, as far as him not reading books and believing in the bible is his thing not ours the judge, I have to admit I don’t read books or the bible as much as I should although I do believe in the bible. He says he don’t believe in it but yet he can go on an awards show and thank GOD, for what he doesn’t read or believe it. GOD is the one who gave him the gift to be who he is and that’s Lil Wayne if GOD takes that away he won’t be anything or anyone but Dewayne Carter. I am a fan of his and listen to his music always have since he’s been out but he did put himself out there and he also represents us as a people and he was ignorant and for him to say that he’s not a role model to no one but his kids and that others should worry about theres is crazy true but crazy because whether he wants to be or not he is but we as parents can also be role models and show our kids Lil Wayne is not the person they want to look up to, use him as an example.

Look not everybody believes in god and hey that’s OK, because lets be honest here most “Christians” don’t act well Christian. I myself am agnostic bordering towards Atheism and have no problems with Christians or people of faith. That’s great and I respect your decision, I was taught to accept all people and your “bible” kinda tells you to do the same (but lets not get into the contradictions of your holy book as I feel you wouldn’t be the best person to talk about religion where people can e-thug).

So of all people you should know that Lil Wayne has made many songs referring to god. He even has a song that is titled “When I pray.” And he is religious you dumb bitch…I don’t know if you haven’t noticed the “Fear God” tattoo on his eye lids. If I weren’t religious, I would not go through the pain of getting fear god on my eyelids, that would hurt just a little too much for me. And not only that, but he may be saying that he doesn’t believe in the bible because over the years it has changed so much. Have you ever heard a storey, and then by the time you hear it again about 50 things have changed about it? Well, how long has the bible been around? Besides possibly being translated wrong, couldn’t some of the things in the bible change over the course of its existence? Maybe things have been added or taken out…you never know….so get real, and stop hatin on him. And yes, that is exactly what you are doing

    Love always….

Oh…and I forgot to mention….Did you know that LIL WAYNE WENT TO COLLEGE?????? I’m just sayin though….get your shit right………….and he happens to be more politically aware than most rappers….actually……most people. I bet if you ask half of the world what is gong on in america…they don’t know as much as he does…..so get real….he knows something wheter he reads or not…..he knows something…….

Since when do i have to believe in everything an artist says to enjoy their musiq? Seriously Wayne probably reads this shit for entertainment and laughs at everybody trippin over some petty shit. If this is the best thing you have to do with your life you need a new hobby. Let Wayne do Wayne and you just do you. He’s gettin paid and nothing you say will effect that. Oh and if you hold your beliefs close to you…Keep them to yourself because one of these days your gonna go on your little rant about your religion and somebody is gonna show you something thats gonna make it hard for you to continue believing in what you do. I personally dont read the bible but i do believe in God. I believe in seeing the miracles and works of God for myself rather than read about some shit that supposedly happened however long ago to who the fuck ever. If you need the bible to be right with God then what exactly does that make you? Practical and ignorant. You wanna see the works of God write a book about your own life and then read it. But please do us all a favor…Dont try to publish it.

ok, not everyone that reads books believes in the Bible. people believe in the Bible because of faith in God, not believing in books. your gift came from God just as he created us. and if u so belive in the Bible, then you shouldnt be telling him to go straight to hell, and u shouldnt be using those curse words if u sooo believe in the Bible. you have a lot of good points in this Destiny. and just because he writes songs with the NAME as religious or his tattoo doesnt make him religious. and look maybe he was saying that cuz he wanted to look cool or whatever but im a christian and i myself am not perfect, being a christian means the ur forgiven, and its not a religion, its a relationship with God, but anyways i agree everywhere else!:)
