Baby born with 2 faces in India, diagnosed with craniofacial duplication

SAINI SUNPURA, India – A baby with two faces was born in a northern Indian village, where she is doing well and is being worshipped as the reincarnation of a Hindu goddess, her father said Tuesday.

The baby, Lali, apparently has an extremely rare condition known as craniofacial duplication, where a single head has two faces. All of Lali’s facial features are duplicated except for her ears–she has two. Otherwise, she has two noses, two pairs of lips and two pairs of eyes.

“My daughter is fine–like any other child,” said Vinod Singh, 23, a poor farm worker.

Lali has caused a sensation in the dusty village of Saini Sunpura, 25 miles east of New Delhi. When she left the hospital, eight hours after a normal delivery on March 11, she was swarmed by villagers, said Sabir Ali, the director of Saifi Hospital.

“She drinks milk from her two mouths and opens and shuts all the four eyes at one time,” Ali said.

Rural India is deeply superstitious and the little girl is being hailed as a return of the Hindu goddess of valor, Durga, a fiery deity traditionally depicted with three eyes and many arms.

Up to 100 people have been visiting Lali at her home every day to touch her feet out of respect, offer money and receive blessings, Singh told The Associated Press.

“She is the reincarnation of a goddess,” said Lakhi Chand, a 65-year-old farmer who came to see Lali from neighboring Haryana state.

“Lali is God’s gift to us,” said Jaipal Singh, a member of the local village council. “She has brought fame to our village.”

Village chief Daulat Ram said he planned to build a temple to Durga in the village.

“I am writing to the state government to provide money to build the temple and help the parents look after their daughter,” Ram said.

Lali’s condition is often linked to serious health complications, but the doctor said she was doing well.

“She is leading a normal life with no breathing difficulties,” said Ali, adding that he saw no need for surgery.

Lali’s parents were married in February 2007. Lali is their first child.

Singh said he took his daughter to a hospital in New Delhi where doctors suggested a CT scan to determine whether her internal organs were normal, but Singh said he felt it was unnecessary.

“I don’t feel the need of that at this stage as my daughter is behaving like a normal child, posing no problems,” he said.

People think she is a reincarnation of a god. But that baby is born with a human mother that meant she has the body of a human being. They should have listened to the doctor and have her CT-scanned to make sure the best of her safety.

And although people claim things like that always happen to India, that child will grow ans this world is cruel

Well i do not agree that “stuff like that always happens in..” .

But even if that is agreed to. Then it is obvious. India has a population of over one billion. So it becomes more likely for such rare conditions to occur in the general population and for them to be reported (given India’s free media).

Thanks Shubhendu for posting exactly what I wanted to post. It’s a matter of statistics. Besides, in US and other “civilized” nations people tend to hide this kind of body mutations, or even abort them before they come to being. I guess I’d prefer being a goddess than a social outcast. But I stress my point here: that happens ALL OVER THE WORLD, from perfectly normal “white people” mothers and fathers, whatever the water they drink.

Do you really think that India is the only place on earth where it is considered appropriate to marry close relatives? That’s happened in Europe and the US up until quite recently. And yes, the drinking water in India may not stand up to the scrutiny of the EPA in the US, but that’s not some flippant comment to be thrown around. I just hope that after time, this family and this village will be left to raise this girl, and not be fodder for xenophobic twits.

As a nurse I saw a lot of birth defects and babies born without a brain (called anencephali) so in India they do not like to buy clothes or anything until after the baby is born. The name is given later. I feel for this child. She is going to face a lot of problems and with all the attention she gets she is not going to like it when she grows up. Why would any baby need a CAT scan ( expose to x-rays) when she is breatihing normally, drinklng milk normally, and acting like any other normal kid?. It is obvious the hospital is in a hurry to be the first one in the world to publish the details of this extremely rare anomaly., and get some fame for thermselves, least worried about the welfare of the child.

I once knew a cult that worshiped a carved replica of a human penis. It’s because according to them people wont be in this world if it was not for the Penis. Sounds more sensible than a god with two faces, don’t you think so?”

Listen, who are you to talk. This is a chils, any normal human being that deserves to be treated with love, kindness, respect and dignity. I believe that anyone who calls her a freak and a monster, rltjs, should open their eyes and look around.

She’s got two faces, big deal. I think it is a miracle that she actually SURVIVED. Jeez, your so typical. She different, and you’re already prejudiced against her.

So if your own kid turned out like that, what would you have done?

I’m 14 years old, and I understand that. You’re an adult, so act like one!

You know… For a whole country to be unanimous in labeling this child as a reincarnation of a hindu goddess is the number 1 most ridiculous thing I’ve EVER HEARD!!!!! While I sympathize for this child, how can such a deformity be considered a miracle??? If I was born like that and someone came to me and told me that I was born a miracle, I’d literally slap the living feces out of you and spit in your eye… I’m not hating or making fun of the child, no way… And while it looks like the parents of this child are given money and given “praise” it just looks to me like they’re paying to see a “freak show…” Way to make things better, really… Note that I’m in no way insulting this child… I wish her the best although it will be difficult for her… We can only hope that the world will not be cruel to her, but reincarnation of hindu goddess?? man, please… thats stupid and childish… one thing though, i do not agree with hinduism, i think its so ridiculous… There is only One God…

do you know the reality in India? Do you know anything about India?

An educated perrson would never think that way. The parents of this child and the villagers who think so are all illiterate.

I am extremely appalled by some comments to this post.
incest is common in India??? the whole nation taking her as a godess??

    what wrong with people.

The comments by some people here are in no way different than those villagers taking the child as a godess.
    1. It is a congenital defect. And a matter of statistics. A greater population means more rare cases are more likely to occur.
    2. About 20 percent of the Indian population is illiterate and that is roughly about 200 million. So that means these would be more inclined to believing crap. I am not indicating that the educated ones would do so.
    3. People writing about inter family marriages know crap about India.
    4. Dude good you don’t believe in Hinduism. But please keep the word mongering crap to yourself. It is a belief people hold. how about learning to respect viewpoints? I don’t believe in god at all. Does that mean i start making fun of you believing in god? It is all relative.
