I can’t fully express how refreshing it is to see a black man speak so articulate, using proper engilsh and speaking about something positive. Speaking about something other than cars, clothes, hoes and money. I really appreciate the fact that you have taken time to learn about the issues involved, you know why you are supporting Obama (not just because he is a black man), and that genuinely appreciate this democratic process that we as natural born American citizens often take for granted.
Please remain positive, focused and determined to help bring about a change in not only our country but our culture. God Bless!

wow. i’m not politically aware and certainly know nothing about American politics, but this guy drew me in so completely with his thorough responses, intellect and knowledge, and eloquence of speech. I love that his appearance (the stereo type) belies is true intellect.
I loved the way this young man defended his statements. I tyhionk the interviewer was looking for an easy target to break down and got a ver intelligent knowledgable man instead.
I get tired of seeing our people on the news talking as if they haven’t had any formal education and it just makes me smile to see this young man here. The reporter bit off more than he could chew and it was evident when he got part way into the interview. This is how more of us need to portray ourselves in the media. I would bet all that I have that the reporter wasn’t as critical to any white person.
GREAT job Derrick. Vote OBAMA.

Awesome! Derrik – you kick butt. I was wondering at first if this was set up, but the antagonistic tactics of the interviewer at first was clear, and his surprise seemed genuine as Derrik’s answers were so well informed.
I wish i could speak as well about Obama’s policies. But i too am for the man, not the party (or the issues, to be honest. The world needs a non-Good-Old-Boy president for the US even more than we Americans do.)
I think it would be an injustice to assume the black man being articulate is an exception to the rule.
I am not black, white or American. I don’t even live remotely near the States but am still interested in the outcome of the presidential elections.
Despite that though, this chap is a legend!
Dude knew his stuff, right on. I think the interviewer was trying to ensnare him into a policy debate (where he thought he would win). I am even more surprised he published the interview, considering it did not fulfill the probable intent of the interviewer.
The only matter I disagreed with the brother was on tax incentives and subsidies to corporations. Those policies breed corruption and create perversive market incentives.

This young man is the most impressive political commentator I have seen in this campaign! I just happened acrosss this site and these videos and I am very impressed. He actually has me thinking that I need to at least consider voting for Obama. And considering that I’m your average white middle aged very conservative GOP-voting man, this is something! I’m going to pass these videos on to the government teacher at my daughter’s high school. Every young American should hear Derrick’s passion for the American political process. And I think we should all forward a link to these videos to Senator Kirk Watson in Texas too! He could certainly take a lesson from this young man.

This is a small glimpse of what happens on a daily basis – People flat out sizing you up based on your skin tone & appearance. I agree w/others – don’t act so surprised by the obvious intelligence of this brother, there are plenty of brothers/sisters out there that aren’t heard because the media only wants to portray us as “coons”. At the same time I wish more of us would stop sleep’g on our God given talent. There wouldn’t be a KKK if folks didn’t recognize & feel threatened by our innate strength.

As a mother, female, scholar, and citizen of society….I am so proud of this individual. Not only for his articulation in speech, but for his knowlege base of the topic at hand as well. The bottom line is and in short…”we all” need to study, learn, and become versed on subject matters before speaking on them; thus being able to support and back up what is emitted from our personal and individual thoughts. I, for one, commend this young man for also taking the time to become aware of what he speaks so strongly of. This in itself truly represents one of the things MLK stood, marched, and believed in….intelligence, knowledge, and voice. Although there are so many more positivities I could add to this comment, I honestly feel as though Derrick has done a superb job in speaking on behalf of all of us who wishes our voices and stances could be heard and valued enough to be aired and shared with others.
Once more, my hat is off to you Derrick and I, for one, would definitely cast my vote for you to become a working entity and part of Senator Obama’s platform.

Hello to everyone out there! I would usually be against commenting because I am not one to jump on the bandwagon, but I watched Derek’s interview and later read the viewer comments. I am glad that he has inspired young Black Americans to speak about and discuss our current politics. Do not get me wrong, I have been involved in the political process even before I could legally vote and am a young Black woman. I think it is a wonderful topic to be discussing..the qualifications of a Black man or a Caucasian woman being the next Democratic Presidential candidate. How did a Caucasian man lose out so poorly to the two of them (only in our country)? I am proud that the two candidates fall under my two categories of minority placement in this society; but, similar to what Derek stated, I will only vote for a candidate based on their policies and how they will effect me. Being an Independent, he does not have to base his vote on what he is expected to do, Derek bases it on the issues as he so eloquently explained. Welcome to America, Sweetie!
I am 45 and to me it seems like the younger people dont really spend time looking at the candidates.
When i was a bit younger i didnt either, but at least now you have the internet to look at the issues and the candidates stances easier.
It looks liek this guy really gets into the issues, too bad most young people still dont.

This was very informative. And yes I agree it should not be about that “voting for a black man because he’s black” type of African-American support. We can leave that up to the millions of tentative voters who do not listen or follow thru on the choices that they make or even vote when given this right to vote. It’s about those of us who know how to utilize an opportunity as a conduit for true social, economic, and political change in this country first. We also have a lot of international challenges and relationships that need to be addressed and repaired. This can only be done by someone who is not influenced by lobbyist, large corporate supporters, and other partisan “groupies” of the “good old boy” networks that continuously grease the wheels of their respective bureaucracy in order to get an agenda passed.
It’s good that Obama gives our culture hope, but it’s even better that Obama gives everyone who is disgruntled with our government a greater hope in saving the country that we live in right now!

We; as in people of color are naturally intelligent & articulate, It begun with our fore fathers & mothers. Those that don’t take advantage of education is by choice. Derrick, continue to be focused & positive. You are indeed a role model. This millennium has proven it to be so.
